🇬🇧Body Position Awareness in Argentine Tango
The importance of our body position is extremely crucial. Being aware of whether our body pulls us forward, backward, or to the side in a state of rest is the foundation and the first phase before any movement. We are all capable of working on our own axis in one way or another. The posture of the body in Argentine tango strives for naturalness.
When we feel its relaxation and calmness, and become aware of our breathing, we are ready for the next step. This is the preparation for movement, that is, the movement itself, which arises as a reaction to the movement of another person or is initiated by ourselves.
The clearest and most pleasant indication of the beginning of a movement is aware and connected breathing with that movement. Inhale as an indication of the beginning, and exhale as an indication of the end of a specific movement, as well as reducing the strain of the movement itself and relaxing the body as a clear completion of an idea.
Our head should follow the position of the body, gently elongated upward. Its position is followed by the vertebrae, which thereby relieve the sacral area of the body's additional weight and release the shoulder complex, which simultaneously opens and relaxes. The shoulders and shoulder blades are lowered downward in an open position, connected to our center of movement. The hips are slightly open, and their position is followed by the knees and feet.
The position of lying on a firmer surface with our back gently connected to the floor, along with arms slightly separated from the body and palms facing forward, opens our hips, and their position will be followed by the knees and feet. This position of our entire body opens up the possibility for changes in position and directions in both standing and lying postures. The body alignment in tango should strive for the posture of a wild cat or an indigenous warrior.
The head should follow the body's alignment, gently extended upwards. The vertebrae align with this position, thereby relieving the sacral area of the body's extra weight and freeing the shoulder girdle, which opens up and releases tension. The shoulders and shoulder blades are held down in an open position, connected to our center of movement. The hips are slightly open, with the knees and feet following their alignment.
Our center, the source of movement, which along with good statics (grounding) and a well-aware body position, can grant full freedom during the movements with which we create and communicate.
“The very idea of Argentine tango communication stems from the optimization of movements.” — Jelena Somogyi
