🇭🇷Svijest o položaju tijela u argentinskom tangu

"Sama ideja komunikacije argentinskog tanga polazi optimalizacije kretnji." Jelena Somogyi

🇬🇧Body Position Awareness in Argentine Tango

The importance of our body position is extremely crucial. Being aware of whether our body pulls us forward, backward, or to the side in a state of rest is the foundation and the first phase before any movement. We are all capable of working on our own axis in one way or another. The posture of the body in Argentine tango strives for naturalness.

When we feel its relaxation and calmness, and become aware of our breathing, we are ready for the next step. This is the preparation for movement, that is, the movement itself, which arises as a reaction to the movement of another person or is initiated by ourselves.

The clearest and most pleasant indication of the beginning of a movement is aware and connected breathing with that movement. Inhale as an indication of the beginning, and exhale as an indication of the end of a specific movement, as well as reducing the strain of the movement itself and relaxing the body as a clear completion of an idea.

Our head should follow the position of the body, gently elongated upward. Its position is followed by the vertebrae, which thereby relieve the sacral area of the body's additional weight and release the shoulder complex, which simultaneously opens and relaxes. The shoulders and shoulder blades are lowered downward in an open position, connected to our center of movement. The hips are slightly open, and their position is followed by the knees and feet.

The position of lying on a firmer surface with our back gently connected to the floor, along with arms slightly separated from the body and palms facing forward, opens our hips, and their position will be followed by the knees and feet. This position of our entire body opens up the possibility for changes in position and directions in both standing and lying postures. The body alignment in tango should strive for the posture of a wild cat or an indigenous warrior.

The head should follow the body's alignment, gently extended upwards. The vertebrae align with this position, thereby relieving the sacral area of the body's extra weight and freeing the shoulder girdle, which opens up and releases tension. The shoulders and shoulder blades are held down in an open position, connected to our center of movement. The hips are slightly open, with the knees and feet following their alignment.

Our center, the source of movement, which along with good statics (grounding) and a well-aware body position, can grant full freedom during the movements with which we create and communicate.

“The very idea of Argentine tango communication stems from the optimization of movements.” — Jelena Somogyi

🇭🇷 Odnos sa sobom i argentinskim tangom/ 🇬🇧Relationship with Oneself and Argentine Tango

🇬🇧 The complete Croatian text is below; the English translation awaits you at the bottom of the page

Očekivanja i odnos često dolaze u paru. Zajedno mogu dovesti do neispunjenja očekivanja onog zamišljenog i onog navodno potrebnog.

Imam li prave cipele?

Carlos Gavito

Glazba argentinskog tanga je je glazba cijeloga svijeta. Za njega ne treba putovnica, već osjećaj. Carlos Gavito

🇬🇧Relationship with Oneself and Argentine Tango

Expectations and relationship often come as a pair. When these expectations remain unfulfilled, they often lead to disappointment, a loss of the desire to communicate, and eventually even a loss of motivation to master the skill we have chosen to learn. The result is often withdrawal.

What matters most is the “development and creation” of a relationship with oneself and with the thing, activity, or person with whom we have chosen to establish contact. In this case, it is the creative skill of Argentine tango, which encompasses not only dance and music, but also a social phenomenon.

Entering the world of Argentine tango should reflect a need and desire to discover and master a new creative skill while exploring its benefits—benefits that do not arise automatically, but rather through developing one's own relationship with the dance and learning to navigate various situations. The value of these benefits grows as we further develop our relationship with ourselves and with Argentine tango.

A wonderful and strong woman once said how glad she was that she had come to tango without a partner. That way, if he was unable to attend a class, she did not have to stay at home or feel like an extra. She was perfectly comfortable being part of a group in which dancers constantly changed partners, as this allowed her to be fully present in class, to learn, and to develop her own relationship with this beautiful dance, independently of the presence of any particular person.

All of the above are common questions and justifications that can slow down our progress.

Will they come?
Will they be in the mood?
How am I supposed to manage now that this person understands it and is working in a different way?
Do I have the right shoes?
I didn't get enough sleep. I can't “connect” today.
The people around me are nervous.
I don't have a regular partner.
I'm not used to listening.
I need a more advanced group.
I need a different floor...

... ... ...

What is indisputable, beyond doubt, and impossible to refute is that, regardless of all real obstacles (temporary physical limitations) and unreal obstacles (those we impose upon ourselves or that are imposed upon us), we need to become familiar with our bodies and their responses.

Proper body alignment should not be something to fear or something we believe we cannot—or do not want to—master. It is something we need for life itself.

Proper alignment and awareness of our bodies enable better communication with ourselves and with the world around us. They make us not only more present, but also more stable in every sense.

The next step is to develop a relationship with movement. Becoming familiar with movements and with our mental and physical responses to them is already a second step toward a dance in which the movements and body alignment feel completely natural.

By developing our own relationship with ourselves, we become stronger and more open to relationships with others—with people with whom we share and create movement, or simply share a conversation. We become more accepting of differences and learn not to step over obstacles, but to overcome them.

A relationship can be defined as repeated interaction, emotional attachment, and the fulfillment of needs.

At milongas, we encounter people who share their presence, their dance, and their creative expression with us, and during the cortinas, our verbal communication. With them, we travel far, near, or remain right where we are.

Argentine tango itself is music and dance of the entire world. Something truly wonderful. A world within the world, whose secret lies in its mystery.

“The great challenge is not in changing the sound, but in connecting with the music and creating something special.”
— Gustavo Adolfo Dudamel Ramírez

“It is a dance that offers you a range of answers to the problems of modern life ... and it is a guide to communication that goes beyond language and culture.”
— Gustavo Naveira

“Tango is a journey, not a destination.”
— Alicia Pons

“Tango begins when the movement stops.”
— Carlos Gavito

“The secret of tango lies in the moment of improvisation between steps and movements. Making the impossible possible: dancing with silence.”
— Carlos Gavito

“The music of Argentine tango is the music of the whole world. You don't need a passport for it, only feeling.”
— Carlos Gavito

Snažan slušatelj i osloboditelj energije u argentinskom tangu

🇬🇧A Powerful Listener and Energy Liberator in Argentine Tango

A powerful listener in Argentine tango is someone who can focus on what the other person is saying, showing, transmitting, and creating, without disrupting the flow of ideas and information, but rather enhancing it at the right moment. As such, they possess a strong focus. Focus is extremely important for all dancers in tango itself.

In a figurative sense, to focus means to place something into the spotlight, the center of interest, the very core of attention, to direct attention toward something essential, to bring something into focus. The term comes from the Latin word focus, which means hearth, focal point. A focus (focal point) is a point in an optical system where rays converge or diverge. Focus is also the distinction and clarity with which an optical system produces an image. In mathematics, foci are the prominent points of a curve, such as an ellipse, while in medicine, it is the focal point of an inflammatory process. In ordinary speech, focus or attention is the center of interest or of some activity.

A powerful listener is present in the moment of conversation, not only physically and perceptually. This skill seems truly easy to achieve, but in practice, it is not quite so.

It requires putting one's own needs aside for the listening of another. Yet, we could also add the development of additional attunement and the creation of intermediate space that graces a powerful listener, who is often called a follower in Argentine tango itself.

The listener in Argentine tango is not the one who blindly accepts the given options of movement information, but is equally an important participant in the speech, along with the acceptance and enhancement of that information.

The participant perceives the true significance of the information transmitted by the speaker or initiator, i.e., the originator of the movement information, if it is clear. Which does not mean that it should not, among other things, leave a free intermediate space.

A powerful listener is a support to the speaker, the initiator in Argentine tango, during creation, acceptance of enhancements, and the liberation of energy. An active participant who, in this way, softens possible obstacles or transforms them into a positive outcome – the optimization of movement.

In order for the listener to hear and listen closely, they need to develop a sense of their own body position and get to know its relationship toward the other person and the environment, along with the contact surfaces. Awareness of their contact surfaces further facilitates the sensation of clear perception. Along with the center of movement and the axis, which are connected to the surface upon which they move.

Our partners with whom we actively participate in Argentine tango as a dance are we ourselves, the floor, the person with whom we share and create movement, the environment, and the music.
